In the autumn of 2023, the community of Cookeville, Tennessee, was shaken by the tragic death of 18-year-old Demarcus Michael Alexander Hughes, a male also known as Alex Brooks. On October 6, 2023, what should have been a normal day at West End Park turned into a scene of violence and loss. A shooting broke out, leaving Hughes fatally wounded and another juvenile injured. Friends who were with him witnessed his final moments.
The Cookeville Police Department quickly launched an investigation. Initially, it was reported that two suspects had fled the scene on foot. However, the investigation led to the arrest of a single juvenile suspect. The identity of the 17-year-old suspect has not been publicly released due to their age. The investigation revealed that the juvenile had brought a Glock handgun to the park, the day after his birthday, and was waving it around recklessly.
The gun discharged from the passenger seat of a vehicle near the basketball court where Hughes was standing outside the driver's door. The bullet traveled through the driver's side door, striking and killing Hughes.
In January 2024, the juvenile suspect pleaded guilty in Juvenile Court to charges of Reckless Homicide, Aggravated Assault, and Tampering with Evidence. According to the District Attorney, the evidence indicated that the juvenile's reckless actions caused the gun to fire, but there was no evidence to suggest an intent to shoot or kill the victims. After the shooting, the perpetrator fled the park and hid the firearm, but later disclosed its location to the police. The juvenile, who has been incarcerated since October, will remain in custody until the age of 19, which is the maximum penalty for this offense when committed by a minor.
