On a tragic evening in Cookeville, Tennessee, the life of 23-year-old Brent Taylor Flatt was cut short. On December 20, 2020, Flatt was lured to a residence on Wildwood Drive by four individuals with the intent to rob him. The male victim was found with multiple gunshot wounds and, despite life-saving efforts by officers who arrived at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
The subsequent investigation by the Cookeville Police Department led to the
swift arrest of four suspects: Isaac Sides, 20; Caleb Venable, 22; Haleigh Watkins, 20; and Kayla Cowen, 22. All four were charged with first-degree murder and were held without bond at the Putnam County Jail. The investigation revealed a plan to rob Flatt that ultimately escalated to his fatal shooting. He was discovered alone and defenseless inside the trailer, with his shirt pulled up over his head. Another individual, Caleb Venable, was also reported as a second shooting victim who had been transported to the medical center by a private vehicle and was later treated and released.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, two of the accused, Isaac Sides and Caleb Venable, entered into plea agreements. They pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder and each received a 35-year prison sentence. This development was met with anguish by Brent Flatt's mother, Amy Flatt, who expressed her profound grief and dissatisfaction with the sentences, feeling they were not severe enough for the loss of her son's life.
As of the latest available information, the other two defendants, Haleigh Watkins and Kayla Cowen, had not accepted any plea deals. Their cases were still pending, with trial dates yet to be determined, as the investigation into the circumstances of Brent Taylor Flatt's untimely death continued.
