In the early morning hours of March 17, 2024, Maurice Thomas Jr., a 33-year-old security guard, was tragically killed while on duty in Nashville, Tennessee. Thomas was patrolling the parking lot of the Illuzion Bar and Lounge on Murfreesboro Pike when he came across a group of individuals breaking into cars. A confrontation followed, leading to Thomas being shot multiple times. He was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he ultimately died from his injuries.
An autopsy later determined he had been shot 13 times in the legs and lower body.
The investigation into the death of Maurice Thomas Jr. led to the swift identification and arrest of three suspects. The first to be apprehended was 19-year-old Isaiah K. Moore, who was charged with criminal homicide. Security camera footage played a crucial role in the investigation, capturing the suspects fleeing the scene in a maroon Chevrolet Cruz, which was subsequently linked to Moore. In addition to the homicide charge, Moore also faced three counts of vehicle burglary.
Further investigation led to the arrests of two more individuals. Quinton Sullivan, 18, was arrested and charged with criminal homicide and three counts of vehicle burglary; his bond was set at $540,000. The third and final suspect taken into custody was Tyler Phan, who was 17 at the time of the incident and is therefore being charged in Juvenile Court with criminal homicide and three counts of vehicle burglary.
Maurice Thomas Jr. was remembered by friends as a 'gentle giant' and was looking forward to becoming a father for the first time, a fact his mother learned the day after his death. He had aspirations of opening his own restaurant and had been working as a security guard for over ten years. The case highlights the dangers faced by security personnel and the tragic consequences of street crime.
