In Dyersburg, Tennessee, on April 6, 2024, a young man named Jaheim Dreshaun Brown, age 22, lost his life in a violent exchange of gunfire. The incident, which also resulted in the death of 23-year-old Mekhi Benson, unfolded at the M.K. Smoke Shop on the Highway 51 bypass, sending shockwaves through the local community. A woman and a child were also reported to have sustained injuries during the altercation.
According to Dyersburg Police Chief Thomas Langford's account of security camera
footage, the tragic events began when Brown was inside the smoke shop making a purchase. Benson then entered the establishment, and an argument erupted between the two men. The verbal dispute quickly escalated to deadly violence when Benson allegedly drew a firearm and opened fire. Brown was also armed and returned fire before leaving the store.
The aftermath of the shootout left a grim scene, with one of the men succumbing to his injuries inside the smoke shop, while the other collapsed and died in the parking lot just a few feet from the entrance. Jaheim Dreshaun Brown was transported to West Tennessee Healthcare-Dyersburg, where he was pronounced dead. Both he and Benson were reportedly regular customers at the smoke shop.
The investigation into the double fatality is ongoing, and authorities have not released information regarding any other suspects or potential arrests. The incident has left the community grappling with the sudden and violent loss of two young lives.
