In the early hours of May 17, 2024, the life of 29-year-old Darrius Jamal Bergeron was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting at the intersection of Hart and Lewis Streets in Nashville, Tennessee. The Black male was pronounced dead at the scene. A witness to the event reported seeing Bergeron approach the passenger side of a white SUV moments before shots rang out.
In the immediate aftermath, two SUVs were seen fleeing the area, heading towards Trimble Street.
The Metro Nashville Police Department's Homicide Unit promptly began an investigation into the shooting. In the months that followed, detectives sought help from the public to identify two men captured in surveillance footage who were wanted for questioning in connection with Bergeron's death. The motive for the shooting remained under investigation as authorities worked to piece together the events of that morning. Friends and family remembered Bergeron as a jokester with a loving spirit and a big heart, who cherished spending quality time with his son.
A significant development in the case came in July 2025, when two men were indicted for the murder of Darrius Bergeron. Andray Stevens, 38, and Antonio Witherspoon, 33, were charged with first-degree murder and especially aggravated robbery. At the time the indictments were served, both men were already incarcerated on other matters. They are both being held on a $500,000 bond.
