Correctional Officer Robert Burns, aged 40, was shot and killed on February 11, 1978, in Nashville, Tennessee. Officer Burns had left work early due to illness and was waiting at a bus shelter when a paroled inmate, whom he had disciplined several months earlier, approached him. The inmate asked if Officer Burns remembered him, to which he responded that he did not. The inmate then produced a handgun and shot Officer Burns once in the chest, killing him instantly.
