On the evening of October 14, 2024, Alyssa Lokits, a 34-year-old woman, went for a run along the Mill Creek Greenway in Antioch, Tennessee, a familiar path near her home. A brilliant neuroscientist with a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University, she worked in the cybersecurity field and was known for her kindness and advocacy for women. As she exercised, a man emerged from between two parked cars and began to follow her.
The sense of a peaceful evening was shattered when witnesses heard her terrified screams, 'Help! He's trying to rape me,' immediately followed by the sound of a gunshot. Alyssa was discovered with a single gunshot wound to the head in an overgrown area beside the trail. She was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but tragically, she succumbed to her injury.
The investigation into the seemingly random and brutal attack moved swiftly, thanks to a crucial piece of evidence from a local resident's dashcam. The footage provided clear images of a suspect and his gray BMW sedan. It captured the man following Alyssa before the attack and returning to his vehicle afterward with visible scratches on his arms and blood on his clothing. In a remarkable turn of events, a Nashville homicide detective, Shannon Forsyth, recognized the man in the footage. She identified him as Paul S. Park, the 29-year-old identical twin brother of a man involved in a suicide case she had investigated nearly three years prior. Less than 24 hours after Alyssa's death, police established surveillance on Paul Park's residence. As soon as an arrest warrant for criminal homicide was issued, detectives moved in.
