In a tragic and violent outburst on a Tuesday evening in Antioch, Tennessee, 24-year-old Tatayana Smith, a female, lost her life. The events unfolded at the Vintage Century Farms Apartments on Cane Ridge Parkway, where an argument between Tatayana and her 37-year-old husband, Theodore Smith, escalated with deadly consequences. The couple reportedly had no prior history of domestic violence with the Metro Nashville Police Department, making the sudden eruption of violence all the more shocking.
On the evening of July 23, 2024, Theodore, who was dressed for his job as a local hotel security guard, asked to speak with his wife in the hallway outside their apartment. Witnesses reported hearing arguing and screaming, followed by gunshots. A witness had attempted to de-escalate the confrontation, convincing Theodore to briefly walk away. However, he quickly turned back, pushed his wife into a corner, and shot her multiple times with a semi-automatic pistol.
The violence did not end there. Theodore then went back into their apartment to retrieve another pistol. He returned to where Tatayana lay and shot her several more times. After fatally wounding his wife, Theodore Smith then turned the gun on himself, ending his own life.
Metro Nashville Police officers from the South Precinct were dispatched to the scene around 8:55 p.m. following reports of the disturbance. Upon their arrival, they discovered both Tatayana and Theodore Smith deceased. The investigation that followed, based on witness statements and evidence at the scene, led detectives to classify the incident as a murder-suicide. The case was investigated by the Nashville Homicide Unit detectives. As the perpetrator took his own life, there will be no arrest or trial.
