Kristie Manago, a 43-year-old Black/African American woman from Philadelphia, was caught in a burst of gunfire late on January 17, 2023, inside the Shangri-La Chinese Restaurant on the 5400 block of Chester Avenue in the city's Kingsessing/Southwest Philadelphia area. It was just before 11:30 p.m. when the quiet of the small takeout space was broken by shots fired from outside and into the restaurant, where customers were standing in the takeout area.

Police said three people were struck. Manago, who lived nearby on Chester Avenue, was found suffering from gunshot wounds and was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Another victim, 19-year-old Johron Jones, was also shot multiple times and taken to the same hospital. Both Manago and Jones died from their injuries; one report listed Manago as being pronounced dead shortly after midnight on January 18, 2023. A third victim, a 20-year-old man, survived initially but was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot multiple times.

Investigators described the shooting as an ambush-style attack. Police said at least 16 shots were fired, with shell casings found both outside the restaurant and inside the small takeout area. Surveillance footage released afterward showed two masked suspects walking near the restaurant before the attack. One suspect approached and fired repeatedly into the business, while the second suspect also appeared armed and pointed a gun toward the restaurant. After the gunfire, both suspects ran away toward South 54th Street.

Early in the investigation, police believed Manago may have been an unintended victim rather than the target of the shooting. Authorities publicly sought two suspects and announced a $40,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, reflecting $20,000 for each homicide suspect. The suspects were described through clothing and build: one wore a light-colored hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, and a face covering, while the other wore a dark hooded puffy jacket, a face covering, black athletic pants with white stripes, and gray athletic shoes.

The case was later marked solved by Philadelphia Police. Public police case information states that a suspect was arrested on February 11, 2023. In related case information for Johron Jones, police said the arrested suspect was charged with murder, conspiracy, and related offenses. The publicly available police summary did not identify the arrested suspect by name in the material reviewed, and it listed the case outcome as pending trial.
