A summer evening in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, which should have been filled with the joy of a 'pop-up party,' turned into a scene of tragedy on June 14, 2024. Amid a crowd of about 100 young people, gunfire suddenly erupted, cutting short the life of 17-year-old Isya 'Cece' Stanley, a female who had just graduated with honors from Freire Charter High School days earlier on June 10.
Stanley, who was at the party with her boyfriend, was struck in the chest and shoulder and was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital shortly after 11 p.m. The shooting also left four other teenagers, ranging in age from 14 to 18, wounded.
Isya was a promising young woman with a bright future ahead of her. Described by her father as a 'young entrepreneur,' she had her own clothing line, played basketball, and was set to attend Morgan State University in the fall to study business. She would have turned 18 on August 20. The joy of her recent graduation, where her family proudly watched her dance across the stage, was cruelly replaced by the grief of planning her funeral. Her family and friends remembered her as a beautiful soul who lit up any room she entered.
The investigation into the senseless violence continued for months. Police believed that two individuals were shooting at each other within the large crowd, and that Isya and the other wounded teens were innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire. A significant breakthrough in the case came in November 2024, when authorities announced the arrest of 17-year-old Zayaan Carroll. He was taken into custody and charged with murder, aggravated assault, carrying a firearm without a license, and possession of an instrument of a crime, among other offenses.
The arrest brought a measure of relief to Isya's grieving parents, who had promised their daughter they would fight for justice. While the pain of their loss remained, they expressed a sense of joy and gratitude that a suspect was in custody, seeing it as a step toward closure. In the wake of her daughter's death, Isya's mother enrolled in school to study criminal justice, hoping to become a private investigator to help prevent other families from experiencing a similar tragedy. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to search for the second shooter.
