On March 1, 2023, a tragic shooting occurred at the Crawford Village housing complex in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, resulting in the deaths of 30-year-old Jordan Dominick Eubanks and 22-year-old Jerred Duncan. The incident began with a physical altercation between Eubanks and Duncan, during which Duncan struck Eubanks. In response, Eubanks, a licensed gun owner, drew his firearm and fired multiple shots at Duncan, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the exchange, 18-year-old Davon Flewellen-Belton, who was present at the scene, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. According to police reports, Flewellen-Belton retrieved a loaded 9mm Taurus handgun from his jacket pocket and fired at Eubanks, claiming he acted in defense of his father, who he believed was under threat. Eubanks was found inside building 47 with a gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, Flewellen-Belton was charged with carrying a firearm without a license and a misdemeanor drug possession charge. He was detained in the Allegheny County Jail after failing to post bail set at $5,000. His preliminary hearing was scheduled for March 13, 2023. At the time, additional charges were under consideration, pending further investigation.
The tragic event prompted discussions about community safety and the prevalence of gun violence in McKeesport. Local authorities emphasized the need for a collective community effort to address underlying issues contributing to such incidents. McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko noted that despite a significant police presence in the area, the shooting still occurred, highlighting the complexity of the problem.
In the aftermath, Eubanks' family remembered him as a responsible individual who had no interest in worldly possessions and was not a threat to anyone. His mother described him as an introvert who stayed in his own bubble, focused on fulfilling his goals and caring for his loved ones. The family held a funeral service to honor his memory and called for justice in the wake of his untimely death.
