On August 6, 2018, 57-year-old Lanny Hutson was tragically shot multiple times by his grandson, 22-year-old Jhalil Brown, in their McKeesport, PA home. Police were called to the scene just before 6:30 a.m. and found Brown standing on the porch, admitting to the shooting. Hutson was found in the living room with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso, head, and arms. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the investigation, police discovered a Glock 19 9mm pistol on the porch and 17 spent shell casings in the living room. Brown was charged with criminal homicide and later pleaded guilty to third-degree murder. In September 2020, he was sentenced to 11 1/2 to 23 months in jail and 10 years probation.
The case shocked the local community, with neighbors expressing disbelief that such a violent incident could occur in their neighborhood. Brown, who had no prior criminal record and was a recent college graduate, claimed that Hutson was the aggressor during the incident. Despite this, the prosecution sought a longer sentence, believing that Brown's actions warranted time in state prison.
