In the small community of Red Lion, Pennsylvania, a young boy's life was tragically cut short on the evening of April 1, 2023. Kain Lewis Heiland, a 12-year-old male, was discovered lying on a pathway between two homes, the victim of a single gunshot wound to the back. An autopsy would later confirm the fatal nature of the injury, ruling his death a homicide.
At the time of his passing, Kain was a seventh-grade student at Red Lion Area Junior High School where he was a member of the wrestling team. He was remembered as an adventurous boy who enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and spending time with his friends and family.
The investigation into Kain's death quickly centered on his 13-year-old friend, Nolan Grove. It was determined that Kain had spent the afternoon and evening with Grove and another friend, with plans for a sleepover. During the day, Grove retrieved a handgun from his home. Witnesses reported seeing him 'playing' with the firearm, loading and unloading it, and activating its laser sight. Surveillance footage from earlier in the evening captured Grove pointing the weapon at Heiland, with the laser dot visible on his torso.
The events that led directly to the shooting began to unfold as the boys were walking through a neighbor's yard. Grove reportedly made a comment about Heiland's mother. When Kain told him to be quiet, Grove responded with a phrase to the effect of 'you know what happens' before removing the gun from his sweatshirt and shooting his friend in the back at close range. The incident was witnessed by the third friend who was with them and by another individual who was on a FaceTime call with the group at the time. After the shot, Grove and the other friend fled the scene. Neither of them called for emergency assistance.
Nolan Grove, who was 14 at the time of his trial, was charged as an adult with third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm by a minor, and recklessly endangering another person. During his trial, Grove testified that he took the gun from his father's safe without permission and claimed he believed it was unloaded. His defense argued that the shooting was a tragic accident, while the prosecution maintained his actions were malicious. Ultimately, a jury found Nolan Grove guilty of third-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to 15 to 30 years in prison for the murder, with an additional one to two years for the misdemeanor count of possession of a firearm by a minor. He also received several years of probation for reckless endangerment charges.
