On the day of the incident, Duarte was responding to an active shooter situation at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County. The shooter, identified as 49-year-old Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, entered the hospital armed with a semiautomatic handgun and a bag containing additional weapons and zip ties. He proceeded to take staff members hostage, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. During the confrontation, officers fired at Archangel-Ortiz, who was ultimately struck multiple times and killed. The York County District Attorney later confirmed that Duarte’s death was a direct result of Archangel-Ortiz’s actions, emphasizing the heroism displayed by the officers who responded to the crisis. Several other individuals, including two officers and three hospital staff members, were injured during the incident. Authorities noted that Archangel-Ortiz had previously been at the hospital with a woman who had received treatment and later died, suggesting that the attack may have been targeted.
