In the cool evening of November 10, 2017, a burst of violence shattered the night in York, Pennsylvania, leaving a young man dead and a community searching for answers. Jimmy Avila-Velez, a 26-year-old male, was walking in the 500 block of West Newton Avenue shortly after 8:30 p.m. when he was fatally shot. The York County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Avila-Velez died at the scene from gunshot wounds to his neck and torso, ruling his death a homicide.
Authorities believed from the outset that the shooting was not a random act of violence, stating that they believed Avila-Velez was specifically targeted.
The investigation into the death of Jimmy Avila-Velez moved swiftly, and within days, York City Police had a suspect in their sights. On November 15, 2017, detectives arrested 16-year-old Yonti Ritter, taking him into custody without incident. Ritter was charged with criminal homicide in connection with the shooting. While Ritter was identified as the primary suspect, police indicated that their investigation was ongoing and that they were looking into several other individuals who were with Ritter at the time of the killing.
The case against Yonti Ritter culminated in a guilty plea that brought a measure of closure to the family of Jimmy Avila-Velez. On June 25, 2018, Ritter, who was 15 at the time of the shooting, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder. The proceedings revealed that the fatal encounter had been captured on surveillance video. In a courtroom filled with emotion, Ritter reportedly offered an apology to Avila-Velez's family, as well as to his own. Following his plea, the teenage perpetrator was sentenced to serve 15 to 30 years in prison for his role in the death of Jimmy Avila-Velez.
