In the afternoon hours of March 27, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a neighborhood in York, Pennsylvania. When the sounds of the shots faded, 16-year-old Tyree Oliver Smart, a male, was left lying on the pavement in the 300 block of West Newton Avenue. Arriving police officers found the teenager with apparent gunshot wounds and immediately began to render aid. Despite their efforts, Tyree succumbed to his injuries.
The subsequent investigation by the York City Police Department quickly pointed to a suspect, another teenager named Alexis Cado-Suero, who was 15 years old at the time. A warrant for his arrest was issued, and he was charged with criminal homicide. For a time, Cado-Suero remained at large, and police sought help from the public to locate him. The search came to an end on a Saturday when a York City Police officer, hearing gunshots in the area of South West Street and West King Street, gave chase to a fleeing individual. After a short pursuit, the suspect was apprehended and identified as Alexis Cado-Suero. A firearm was recovered nearby.
With the suspect in custody, the legal process began. The investigation had uncovered evidence that led to Cado-Suero being charged with the murder of Tyree Smart. The case proceeded through the justice system, culminating in a four-day trial. Following the presentation of evidence, a jury found Alexis Cado-Suero guilty of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a minor. At the age of 18, he was sentenced to serve 45 years to life in prison for his role in the death of Tyree Oliver Smart.
