In the early hours of Monday, December 29, 2025, the life of 18-year-old Rafael Mercado Jr. was tragically cut short in a shooting that occurred in a residence on the 600 block of West College Avenue in York, Pennsylvania. Police were dispatched to the scene at 12:13 a.m. where they found Mercado had been fatally shot.
An investigation into the shooting led police to 17-year-old Jadin Lagares of York. Authorities have reported that Mercado and Lagares were known to one another.
Following the incident, investigators recovered a firearm and additional ammunition from Lagares' home. Lagares was taken into custody and is set to be charged as an adult with homicide. As of late December, he was awaiting arraignment.
Rafael, born on October 21, 2007, was a junior at William Penn High School. He was known by loved ones for his big heart, bright smile, and infectious laughter. His family described him as having a special way of making everyone around him feel safe, welcomed, and loved. An avid Philadelphia Eagles fan, he found joy in simple pleasures, especially good food. He is survived by his parents, son, partner, and numerous other family members and friends.
