On April 24, 2023, at approximately 12:13 p.m., 33-year-old Seitu Harris was fatally shot in North Philadelphia. The incident occurred near the intersection of Watts Street and Girard Avenue, outside a Cricket Wireless store. Harris was approached by two individuals, Daniel Gonzalez and Deonte Davis, who had just exited the Broad Street Line’s Girard Avenue subway stop. An unprovoked verbal exchange ensued between Davis and Harris, during which both assailants brandished firearms.
Davis briefly entered the store, seemingly to check for witnesses, before he and Gonzalez opened fire on Harris, striking him multiple times. A 20-year-old bystander was also injured during the shooting. Both suspects fled the scene via the subway.
In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators collected crucial evidence, including palm prints from the Cricket store's door and the SEPTA turnstile. Surveillance footage and social media analysis further implicated the suspects; videos on Gonzalez's Instagram account showed him wearing the same distinctive 'Thrasher' hoodie and red sneakers observed at the crime scene. Gonzalez was arrested on May 8, 2023, and charged with third-degree murder, conspiracy, and related firearm offenses. He was found guilty in September 2024 and is scheduled for sentencing on November 1, 2024. Davis remains at large, and authorities continue to seek information regarding his whereabouts.
Harris was remembered by his family as a passionate musician who contributed significantly to his community. His sister, Patricia Harris, highlighted his dedication to teaching music to both children and senior citizens, noting his aspirations to start his own business and his love for singing. The conviction of Gonzalez brings a measure of justice to Harris's family, though the search for Davis continues as authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
