On May 6, 2023, at approximately 5:35 p.m., Philadelphia police responded to reports of gunfire in the 6700 block of Torresdale Avenue in the Tacony neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered 44-year-old Juan Salcedo-Collazo with a fatal gunshot wound to the head; he was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:44 p.m. Another victim, 42-year-old Arthur Spiller, sustained a gunshot wound to the right abdomen and was transported to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries
around 6:15 p.m. A third individual, a 20-year-old male, suffered gunshot wounds to the right leg and a graze wound to the chest; he was hospitalized in stable condition.
Surveillance footage circulating on social media captured the incident, showing a group of approximately seven people near a storefront when a physical altercation erupted. During the melee, one individual brandished a firearm and began shooting, causing the crowd to scatter. Another person appeared to take cover and return fire.
Investigators have since confiscated a vehicle and a weapon connected to the case. An arrest has been made in relation to the shootings; however, authorities have not publicly disclosed the suspect's identity or the specific charges filed.
The deaths of Salcedo-Collazo and Spiller are part of a concerning trend in Philadelphia, which recorded 43 homicides in May 2023, reflecting an increase from the previous month.
