In the summer of 2019, a promising young man's life was tragically cut short on a street in South Philadelphia. Ammar Hassan, a 17-year-old Black male, was shot and killed on the evening of August 14, 2019. The incident occurred on the 2300 block of Bambrey Terrace, where police responded to a report of a male shot just before 7:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Hassan on the sidewalk, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
He was rushed to Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Ammar was a young man with a future full of plans. He was a student at West Catholic Preparatory High School with an interest in business, a passion he was already putting into practice by helping with his family's home improvement business. Known as a go-getter by his mother, Ammar had also participated in the WorkReady program to gain work experience. Tragically, at the time of his death, he was also an expectant father, a piece of news he had not yet shared with his mother. His daughter was born in February 2020.
The investigation into Hassan's death revealed that he had arrived on Bambrey Terrace in a minivan with another man. After they knocked on a door, the other man left in the vehicle. Hassan was seen pacing nervously for some time before the van returned with at least two individuals, including the shooter. Following a conversation that lasted 10 to 15 minutes, one of the individuals shot Hassan in the back of the head. Police later found 31 packets of heroin and $320 in cash, some of which was counterfeit, on Hassan's person. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
Despite the tragic circumstances of his death, which occurred on the same night as a high-profile police standoff in another part of the city that drew national attention, Ammar Hassan's case has received significantly less focus. As of the latest available information, no arrests have been made in connection with his murder, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward. A reward of up to $20,000 is available for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death.
