Samuel Roberts was a 73-year-old Black man from Meridian, Mississippi, whose final drive through rural Clarke County early on Sunday, September 6, 2020, ended on the shoulder of Highway 18 near the tiny community of Pachuta, not far from Quitman. Shortly after daybreak, sheriff's deputies responding to a call about a body by the road found him lying near the intersection of Highway 18 and Highway 512, dead from gunshot wounds, and immediately opened a homicide investigation.
