On April 3, 1989, the body of Terrence Patrick Brennan was found washed ashore along the coast of Lake Erie in Lorain, Ohio. He was discovered among the rocks behind a building on West Erie Avenue, north of West 21st Street. Terrence was 36 years old at the time of his death. When he was found, he was wearing a western-style shirt, jeans, a cowboy boot, and had a yellow-metal cross necklace with turquoise stones, as well as a Seiko watch.
The Lorain Police Department initially classified the death as suspicious but was unable to make a positive identification for several decades.
At the time of the discovery, authorities attempted to use dental records and fingerprints, but due to technological limitations, they were unable to identify Terrence. It wasn't until advancements in fingerprinting technology were made that his identity was confirmed in 2017, nearly three decades after he was found. Brennan was originally from a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, and had a prior criminal record from 1971 in Illinois, which eventually helped investigators identify him once fingerprint databases became more accessible across jurisdictions.
The initial investigation into Terrence Brennan’s death considered the possibility of an accidental drowning, particularly as his body washed ashore. At the time, there were reports of missing persons, including boaters and a downed pilot, which complicated efforts to determine the circumstances of his death. Ultimately, no definitive cause was established, and the case has remained unsolved. Authorities are still seeking information regarding why Terrence was in the area and the events that led to his death. The Lorain Police Department continues to request public assistance in solving the case and bringing closure to his family.
