In the small town of Quitman, Mississippi, a dispute between two men over a woman escalated to a fatal conclusion, ending the life of 25-year-old Marcus Blanks. The events leading to the deadly encounter began with a fistfight at a local gas station. Following the altercation, Blanks made his way to the Quail Run Apartments.
Shortly after Blanks' arrival at the apartment complex on the evening of February 18, 2016, another man, identified as 24-year-old Michael Sumrall, appeared, armed with a gun. There, in the parking lot, Sumrall allegedly shot Blanks three times, striking him in the abdomen, arm, and head. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Blanks was transported to H.C. Watkins Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his wounds around 10 p.m. that night.
The investigation into the shooting led to the swift apprehension of two suspects. Michael Sumrall was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder. Another individual, 19-year-old Carey Horn, was also arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, as he was reportedly driving the vehicle that transported Sumrall to the scene of the shooting.
