In what was described by authorities as a murder-suicide, 29-year-old Megan Saunders was killed in her Dover Township, Pennsylvania, home on September 13, 2023. The perpetrator was identified as her 31-year-old former partner, Devon Elias. The two shared a child and had a history of domestic issues, which had led to Saunders obtaining a Protection From Abuse order against Elias in Baltimore County, Maryland.
The tragic events unfolded on a Wednesday morning when neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots around 8:30 a.m. and saw Elias chasing Saunders into her residence on Strawbridge Court. When the first officer from the Northern York County Regional Police Department arrived, Elias warned them not to enter, claiming he had a hostage. This initiated a nearly five-hour standoff, during which negotiators were in contact with Elias, who made threats against both Saunders and himself.
At approximately 2:20 p.m., officers heard a final gunshot from inside the home. The York County Quick Response Team then forced entry and discovered Saunders deceased on the stairway between the second and third floors. She had sustained multiple gunshot wounds from a. 380 caliber pistol that was later found to have been reported stolen in 1984. Elias was found in a third-floor bedroom with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A. 22 caliber pistol was found next to him.
The day of the murder-suicide, Saunders and Elias had been scheduled for a 10 a.m. court hearing in Maryland, which Elias did not attend. Investigators believe Elias entered Saunders' home that morning, leading to the fatal confrontation.
