On March 5, 2024, at approximately 6:38 p.m., 37-year-old Carmelo Drayton was fatally shot aboard a Route 79 SEPTA bus near the intersection of South Broad Street and Snyder Avenue in South Philadelphia. The incident began with an argument between Drayton and another passenger, which escalated when the assailant produced a firearm and shot Drayton multiple times. Drayton sustained several gunshot wounds and was transported to Jefferson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene by entering the Snyder Avenue SEPTA Station on the Broad Street Line, boarding a southbound train. Surveillance footage captured images of the suspect, described as having twisted braids and a distinctive dark mark or tattoo under his left eye. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a black puffy hooded jacket with red lining, a black ski mask with a Nike logo, light grey pants, and black shoes.
In the days following the incident, Philadelphia Police released surveillance videos and images of the suspect to the public, seeking assistance in identifying and apprehending him. A $20,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
On June 10, 2024, authorities arrested a suspect in connection with Drayton's murder. The individual was charged with murder and related offenses. As of now, the case outcome is pending trial.
Drayton's death was one of several violent incidents on or near SEPTA properties during that period, prompting increased security measures and public concern regarding safety on public transportation in Philadelphia.
