On a Tuesday evening, September 26, 2017, the life of 16-year-old Jai Custus, a Black male, was tragically cut short. The incident occurred at approximately 8:38 p.m. on the 100 block of East Pastorius Street in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, the very block where he resided. Gunfire erupted in what police believe was a shootout, and Jai was caught in the crossfire.
He was struck once in the back.
Philadelphia Police officers responded to reports of the shooting and discovered a chaotic scene with multiple victims. Along with Jai, three other young people had been shot: a 19-year-old male, an 18-year-old male, and a 13-year-old female. Emergency responders rushed all four victims to Albert Einstein Medical Center. Despite their efforts, Jai Custus was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after his arrival. The other three victims were treated for their injuries and were expected to survive.
The investigation into the shooting suggested a violent exchange of gunfire, with shell casings discovered on both sides of the street, spanning an entire city block. Authorities believed the four victims were not the intended targets but were inadvertently struck during the shootout between two individuals or groups.
As of now, the case remains unsolved. The Philadelphia Police Department continues to seek information from the public to help bring those responsible for Jai Custus's death to justice. No suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Detectives urge anyone with information to come forward.
