Sean Henderson, also publicly memorialized as Shawn Henderson, was a 26-year-old Black male from Philadelphia whose life ended in the early morning darkness of Thursday, January 5, 2017. Police were called to the 2900 block of West Oakdale Street in the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia for a report of a shooting. When officers arrived at about 1:20 a.m., they found him lying in the street, unresponsive, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Philadelphia Fire Department medics were already on the scene and confirmed that he had died there.
The scene suggested a sudden and close-range attack. Police said Henderson was found on the roadway near 29th and Oakdale Streets with a gunshot wound to the head. Investigators recovered at least two spent shell casings near his body, indicating that more than one shot had been fired. What began as an emergency call in the middle of the night quickly became a homicide investigation, with detectives trying to piece together who had approached him, why he was targeted, and where the shooter went after the gunfire.
Witness information released publicly gave police only a limited description of the possible suspect. The person believed to have approached Henderson was described as a man wearing a dark-colored hat and dark clothing, with a thin build. After the shooting, that possible suspect was reportedly seen fleeing in a vehicle near the 2900 block of Oakdale Street. No public source reviewed identified the suspect by name, and no public reporting located confirmed a motive.
The Philadelphia Police Department continues to list the case as unsolved under district control number 17-22-001061. Public police information does not show any arrests, charges, trial, or conviction connected to Henderson’s killing. Instead, detectives have continued asking anyone with information to contact the Philadelphia Police Department’s tip line, emphasizing that tips can be submitted anonymously.
Henderson’s death was later included in public gun-violence memorial listings, where he was remembered as someone lost to gun violence in Philadelphia on January 5, 2017. Those memorial entries also show that people who knew or loved him continued to leave messages after his death, including personal notes of grief and remembrance. The public record leaves his case in a painful place: a young man shot dead in the street, a brief suspect description, a vehicle seen leaving the area, and no publicly confirmed arrest to answer for what happened.
