Tyreece Jerry, a 35-year-old Black male from Philadelphia, was killed on Monday evening, May 13, 2024, after a dispute inside the Federal Deli Market at 1946 Federal Street in the city’s Point Breeze neighborhood. The confrontation unfolded around 6:35 to 6:40 p.m., near 20th and Federal streets and close to the 17th Police District. What began as an argument inside the corner store escalated into violence involving Jerry, a suspected shooter, and another person of interest.
Police
said the altercation turned deadly when one of the women pulled out a handgun and fired several shots. Jerry was struck multiple times, including wounds to his torso and leg. Officers responding to the scene found him outside the store, lying on the ground or in the street after the shooting. They placed him in a patrol vehicle and rushed him to Jefferson University Hospital, where he died later that evening, around 8 p.m.
The shooting left Jerry’s family grieving a sudden and public loss. His father, Shawnbrean Davis, spoke afterward about the heartbreak of losing his son, saying Jerry had five children: two daughters and three sons. He described the pain of having to bury his child and urged the women involved to turn themselves in. Investigators also said at least one bullet went through the glass door of the store, and employees reopened the next day after replacing damaged glass.
At the time police released information, they were looking for a suspected shooter and a second woman described as a person of interest. The suspected shooter was described as short and thin, with short braids, and was reported to have worn a white hooded sweatshirt and dark pants; another report said she was about 5 feet 2 inches tall, between 23 and 25 years old, wearing dark gray Crocs and black pants with distinctive holes on the legs. Police said the hooded sweatshirt was recovered at the scene. The second woman was described as being in her late 20s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, wearing a head scarf or denim jacket, a black shirt, dark pants or black pants with holes, and white sandals. She was last reported running eastbound on the 1900 block of Manton Street. Investigators said the two women fled in different directions after the shooting, and surveillance footage captured them.
The case was later marked solved by Philadelphia police. A suspect was arrested on Monday, July 15, 2024, in connection with Jerry’s death.
