In the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, a violent encounter on July 12, 2024, claimed the life of 31-year-old Jean Carlos Ortiz-Collazo. On that day, police responded to a report of a shooting on the 3100 block of Kensington Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered Ortiz-Collazo suffering from a gunshot wound to his neck. He was immediately transported to Temple University Hospital in critical condition.
For eleven days, Ortiz-Collazo fought for his life, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The incident drew the attention of law enforcement who began an investigation into the deadly shooting. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect in the case.
On July 24, 2024, police arrested 44-year-old Shawayne Burnett in connection with the shooting. Following his arrest, Burnett was charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, and robbery for his alleged involvement in the death of Ortiz-Collazo. He is currently being held without bail.
