In the early morning hours of May 8, 2026, the life of 31-year-old Tamir Hill was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in North Philadelphia. Hill, along with two 26-year-old men, were sitting on the front steps of a Philadelphia Housing Authority property on the 2500 block of West Berks Street when the shooting occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m.
The sudden violence shattered the pre-dawn quiet, leaving a scene of chaos and tragedy.
Responding to numerous 911 calls, Philadelphia Police and Philadelphia Housing Authority Police officers arrived to find three men suffering from gunshot wounds. All three victims were rushed to Temple University Hospital. Hill, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital. The two other men were listed in critical condition. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear to investigators.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police had not identified any suspects and no arrests had been made. Investigators recovered at least seven spent shell casings from the scene, some found very close to where the victims had been sitting. The investigation into the death of Tamir Hill and the wounding of the two other men was taken over by the Homicide Unit, who were seeking information from the public and reviewing footage from nearby surveillance cameras in the hopes of identifying those responsible for the deadly assault. The case remains a stark reminder of the gun violence that continues to affect communities.
