In the late hours of a Tuesday night in Philadelphia, the Shangri-La takeout restaurant on Chester Avenue became the scene of a tragedy that claimed the life of 19-year-old Johron Jones. On January 17, 2023, just before 11:30 p.m., two armed individuals burst into the small eatery and opened fire, unleashing a hail of at least 15 bullets. The sudden violence left three people struck by gunfire.
Johron Jones, who had celebrated his birthday on the same block just a month prior, suffered
gunshot wounds to his head and torso and was pronounced dead at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center shortly after the attack. Also killed in the shooting was 43-year-old Kristie Manago, who was hit in the shoulder and died at the hospital. Authorities believe Manago may have been an unintended victim, caught in the crossfire while simply picking up food. A third victim, a 20-year-old man described as Jones's close friend, was critically injured with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and leg.
The Philadelphia Police Department is actively searching for the two male suspects responsible for the double homicide. Surveillance footage from the area captured images of the alleged gunmen. One is described as a man with a thin build, wearing a light-colored hoodie, dark pants, and a black face covering. The second suspect, also with a thin build, was seen in a black hooded puffer jacket, Adidas track pants with three white stripes on the upper legs, gray sneakers, and a black facial covering. The two were seen fleeing south on 54th Street after the shooting.
The motive behind the deadly assault remains unclear to investigators. A significant reward of $40,000 has been offered by the City of Philadelphia for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individuals who cut short the lives of Johron Jones and Kristie Manago. The investigation is ongoing, and as of now, no arrests have been made in the case.
