In the late summer evening of August 12, 2024, just two weeks shy of his eighteenth birthday, 17-year-old Antoine Byers Jr. was shot and killed in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The male teenager, who was known to enjoy football, wrestling, and music, had plans to enlist in the U.S. Army in the coming months. His life, however, was cut short on a street corner at the intersection of 18th and Regina Streets following a series of escalating events.
The tragic incident began with a physical altercation between Antoine and a female minor. According to accounts based on surveillance footage, the young woman was hitting Antoine as he tried to cover his face and push her away. When the girl's boyfriend intervened and pulled her back, Antoine's friends also tried to hold him back. Breaking free, Antoine pulled out a handgun, a possession his father was unaware of, and fired three shots in the direction of the girl, though no one was struck.
At that moment, 30-year-old Rashad Neal, who had arrived at the scene in a gray Nissan Altima with three other individuals, exited the vehicle. In response to the shots fired by Antoine, Neal, using a gun that belonged to someone else in the car, fired back, fatally wounding the teenager. The Dauphin County District Attorney's office would later review the surveillance video and rule the shooting an act of self-defense, a conclusion with which Antoine's father, Antoine Byers Sr., publicly agreed after viewing the footage himself.
Despite the self-defense ruling, Rashad Neal was not cleared of all wrongdoing. Due to a prior murder conviction in North Carolina, Neal is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. Consequently, while he does not face murder charges for Antoine's death, an arrest warrant was issued for him on multiple felony charges, including illegal possession of a firearm and fleeing to another state to avoid arrest. Following the shooting, Neal reportedly fled to North Carolina and, as of late September 2024, remained a fugitive.
