Leonard Quattlebaum, a 31-year-old male of African American ethnicity, tragically lost his life on April 3, 2022, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The incident occurred outside the USA Fried Chicken store at 13th and Derry streets. Quattlebaum was fatally shot by Jeremy Bailey, a 34-year-old man, during a dispute that escalated into violence.
The altercation began the day before, on April 2, 2022, when Bailey and Quattlebaum had a disagreement.
Bailey attempted to resolve the dispute violently but his gun jammed. Determined to settle the matter, Bailey tracked Quattlebaum to the restaurant early the next morning. He burst into the store and fired multiple shots as Quattlebaum fled. One of the bullets missed Quattlebaum but struck Nelbenson Sanchez, an innocent bystander, in the head, killing him instantly. Bailey continued his pursuit and fatally shot Quattlebaum in the back, piercing his heart.
During the trial, Bailey claimed another individual was responsible for the killings, but the jury found him guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm by a former felon, carrying a firearm without a license, and recklessly endangering another person. On January 15, 2025, Bailey was sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole for the murders, along with an additional 10 to 20 years for illegal firearm possession.
The case was investigated by Detective Brian Carriere of the Harrisburg Bureau of Police, and prosecuted by First Assistant District Attorney Mike Sprow and Deputy District Attorney Alexandra McNulty. Sprow condemned Bailey's actions, emphasizing that the dispute should have been resolved with words, not violence.
