On June 15, 2023, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call at a residence on Sunwalk Court in north Charlotte. Upon arrival, they discovered 12-year-old Ahmad Wrighten suffering from significant trauma. He was immediately transported to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased upon arrival.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of 34-year-old Anthony Rashad Wigfall and 32-year-old Demetria Robinson, both charged with first-degree murder in connection with Ahmad's death. Family members revealed that Ahmad, a resident of Charleston, South Carolina, was visiting Charlotte to attend a graduation ceremony. During his stay, he was at Wigfall's residence, who is the father of Ahmad's 15-year-old sister. According to the family, an altercation occurred during which Ahmad was severely beaten, resulting in his death. The assault reportedly took place in the presence of other children, including a 4-year-old girl.
During their initial court appearance, both Wigfall and Robinson were informed of the charges against them and were appointed public defenders. They are currently held without bond at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center. The motive behind the assault remains unclear, and CMPD has described the case as "incredibly complex," indicating that it may involve multiple locations. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
