In the early hours of July 24, 2023, Durham police responded to a disturbance in the 800 block of Angier Avenue. Upon arrival around 1:45 a.m., officers discovered three men with varying degrees of injuries: two sustained serious harm, while the third suffered minor injuries. The seriously injured individuals were transported to a local hospital, where one, identified as 67-year-old Durham resident Ronnie Christopher Streeter, was pronounced dead.
Investigations revealed that the men had been involved in a physical altercation leading to the injuries. At the scene, police arrested 65-year-old Durham resident Clarence Winston III. He was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, and felony assault on a disabled person. Winston was subsequently held in the Durham County Jail without bond.
In the aftermath of the incident, Streeter's daughter, Veronica, initiated a GoFundMe campaign seeking $10,000 to cover her father's burial expenses, citing challenges with life insurance coverage. She described receiving news of her father's death as the "worst call of her life."
The Durham Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the altercation. Authorities have indicated that the incident appears to be isolated.
