Kamari Munerlyn, a 7-year-old African American boy from Durham, North Carolina, tragically lost his life on June 4, 2017. Kamari was a passenger in an SUV returning from a pool party when the vehicle was targeted in a shooting. The incident occurred near Hillandale Road and Peppertree Street, where the SUV was shot into multiple times. Kamari was the only one injured in the attack and was rushed to a nearby hospital by EMS responders, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries that
afternoon.
The investigation into Kamari's death led to the arrest of 28-year-old Devon Maurice Fowler. Fowler was apprehended at an Extended Stay America hotel in Raleigh and charged with murder and felony conspiracy in connection with the crime. Authorities believe that the shooting was not a random act and that Kamari's mother's boyfriend was the intended target. Fowler had a history of prior convictions, including assault on a female and possession of a stolen firearm.
Kamari's death sparked outrage and grief within the Durham community. A candlelight vigil was held in his honor near the Tokyo Express restaurant on Guess Road, where family, friends, and community members gathered to remember the young boy and call for an end to gun violence. Kamari's grandmother, Lisa Gerald, addressed the crowd, expressing her sorrow and emphasizing the need for the violence to stop.
The case against Fowler progressed with a grand jury indictment on charges of murder and felony conspiracy. Prosecutors have not indicated whether they will seek the death penalty for Fowler. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to search for any additional suspects or information related to the case. Kamari's family continues to mourn the loss of their beloved son and calls for justice to be served.
