On December 15, 2023, at approximately 10:30 p.m., officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded to a call in the 5600 block of Paces Glen Avenue in east Charlotte. Upon arrival, they discovered 18-year-old Lonnie McConico Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound. Tragically, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. A second individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and self-transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The incident took place in the parking lot of an apartment complex, where both victims were found. CMPD's Homicide Unit detectives initiated an investigation, processing the scene and collecting physical evidence. Despite their efforts, no arrests have been made, and the department has not released any information regarding potential suspects or motives. Earlier in the year, on April 5, 2023, McConico was involved in a separate criminal incident. He and 19-year-old Mekayla Rodgers were arrested following a high-speed chase in west Charlotte. The pursuit began after a vehicle, previously reported stolen in an armed carjacking, was identified by a license plate reader. The chase concluded when the vehicle crashed near Wesley Green Way. Both individuals attempted to flee on foot but were apprehended with the assistance of police K-9 units. They faced charges including eluding arrest, resisting a public officer, and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
As of now, there is no publicly available information linking McConico's past criminal activities to his subsequent death. The investigation into his homicide remains active and ongoing. CMPD continues to seek assistance from the community to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
