On April 21, 2024, at approximately 12:25 a.m., the Statesville Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a gunshot victim at a residence in the 600 block of Stewart Court in Statesville, North Carolina. Upon arrival, officers discovered 52-year-old Richard Wayne Pledger, known affectionately as "Pumpkin," inside the home with multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the prompt efforts of emergency responders from Iredell County EMS and the Statesville Fire Department, Pledger was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Following a thorough investigation, authorities identified 30-year-old Devin Emanuel Rankin as the primary suspect in Pledger's death. On June 27, 2024, Rankin was apprehended at a residence on North Lackey Street in Statesville by the U.S. Marshals Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force, in collaboration with the Iredell County Sheriff's Department and the Statesville Police Department. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, and discharging a firearm within city limits. Due to the severity of the charges, Rankin was placed in the Iredell County Jail without bond.
The arrest of Rankin brought a measure of relief to the community and Pledger's family, who had been awaiting justice for their loved one. The Statesville Police Department extended its gratitude to the U.S. Marshals Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Iredell County Sheriff's Department, North Carolina Probation and Parole, and the District Attorney’s Office for their partnership and support throughout the investigation.
