In the late afternoon of a Wednesday in June, tragedy struck the Southside of Jacksonville, Florida, leaving a family shattered and a community in search of answers. Kenneth Mobley, a 38-year-old man, was fatally shot on June 11, 2025, in the bustling parking lot of Copeland's restaurant. The brazen act, carried out in broad daylight, cut short the life of a man remembered by loved ones for his infectious smile and vibrant spirit.

On that day, Mobley had gone to the restaurant at the intersection of Southside Boulevard and Touchton Road with the intention of meeting someone. The specifics of this meeting remain unclear, but it ended in a hail of bullets. When officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrived at the chaotic scene, they found Mobley with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police detained three individuals for questioning as they began to piece together the events that led to Mobley's death. They also initiated a search for a dark-colored, four-door vehicle, possibly a Nissan, that was seen at the location.

The weeks that followed were filled with grief and uncertainty for Mobley's family and friends. They gathered to celebrate what would have been his 39th birthday on June 23rd, not with a party, but with a vigil. They lit candles, shared memories, and made public pleas for anyone with information to come forward and help bring his killer to justice. Their faith and the support of the community sustained them as they navigated the painful reality of their loss.

A break in the case came in late July when the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, with the assistance of U.S. Marshals, arrested 24-year-old Josiah Martinez. He was taken into custody on a warrant for second-degree murder in connection with Mobley's death. Investigators identified Martinez as the individual who fired the shots that killed Mobley. The investigation continued, and in mid-August, a second arrest was made. Natania Ribot, also 24, was charged with accessory after the fact. Police determined that she was the driver of the getaway car that whisked Martinez away from the scene of the crime. While the arrests brought a sense of relief to Mobley's family, they still believe that others may have been involved in the planning and execution of the crime that stole a beloved father, son, and friend from their lives.
