In the early morning hours of April 15, 2023, the life of 45-year-old Devon Millington was cut short by gunfire near the Woodlawn subway station in the Norwood section of the Bronx. Police responded to a call at approximately 5:47 a.m. and discovered Millington with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to Montefiore Medical Center, but the efforts to save him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced deceased.
The incident took place in the vicinity of 3700 Jerome Avenue, the last
stop on the 4 subway line. Witnesses reported that the shooting may have occurred on the elevated train platform. One account described seeing the victim, clothed in blood-soaked garments, coming down the stairs from the station. Investigators recovered a gun at the scene, though it was not immediately clear if it was the weapon used in the homicide. At the time of the initial reports, no arrests had been made, and the investigation into the shooting remained active.
Millington, a resident of the Wakefield section of the Bronx, had a troubled past that had been documented in court records and news reports. In 2000, he was involved in the robbery and fatal shooting of a bartender named Everard “Erik” Gerrald at a sports bar in Wakefield. Convicted of second-degree murder, Millington was sentenced to a term of 18 years to life in prison. After serving nearly two decades, he successfully appealed his life sentence and was granted parole, being released in July 2019, less than four years before he himself would become a victim of gun violence.
