A summer evening water gun fight in a Bronx park took a tragic and fatal turn, ending the life of 17-year-old Darrell Harris on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. The seemingly innocent pastime among a group of teenagers in Starlight Park escalated into a deadly confrontation. Witnesses reported that the playful atmosphere soured when Harris asked another participant to stop repeatedly spraying him with a water gun.
In response, the individual produced a real firearm and shot Harris.
The shooting occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. near Sheridan Boulevard and East 173rd Street. Harris sustained gunshot wounds to his head and right arm. Emergency services were called to the scene, and he was transported to Jacobi Hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. At the time of his death, Harris was a rising senior at the Bronx Leadership Academy. His mother, Kellie Lewis, described him as a quiet child who mostly stayed indoors. Tragically, this was the second son she had lost to gun violence, her older son having been killed in a 2021 shooting.
As of late June 2025, the New York City Police Department had made no arrests in connection with the shooting, and the investigation remained ongoing. The identity of the shooter had not been publicly released by authorities. Harris's mother has since called for stricter gun laws in the wake of her son's death.
