On a summer evening in the Bronx, the life of a young Black man, Melshawn Cook, was tragically cut short. On June 3, 2017, the 24-year-old was found with a fatal gunshot wound to his torso behind a home on Wheeler Avenue in the Soundview section of the borough. Emergency responders rushed him to Jacobi Medical Center, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
