On a warm Memorial Day evening in Syracuse, New York, friends and family gathered for a cookout, a joyous occasion that would soon turn into a scene of tragedy. Among them was Demond Jones, a 44-year-old Black man, who was enjoying the holiday festivities on May 29, 2023. The celebration was shattered at approximately 9:47 p.m. when a car drove by the gathering in the 400 block of Bellevue Avenue and gunfire erupted.
