A quiet Sunday morning at the Mattydale Express on Brewerton Road took a tragic turn on September 28, 2025, ending in the death of the store's owner, Emad Alharbi. The 31-year-old male was working at his North Syracuse establishment when a man entered and attempted to shoplift. The confrontation that followed would prove to be fatal.
The individual, later identified as 30-year-old Alec Greiger of Mitchell Avenue in Salina, was trying to steal merchandise around 11:30 a.m.
When Alharbi intervened, Greiger produced a firearm and shot him multiple times. Alharbi was rushed to Upstate University Hospital, but the severity of his injuries was too great, and he was pronounced dead.
The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office quickly launched an investigation and identified Greiger as the person responsible for the deadly shooting. Deputies tracked him to his residence, where a tense situation unfolded. Law enforcement officials engaged in lengthy negotiations, attempting to persuade Greiger to surrender peacefully. The efforts were ultimately unsuccessful. Before he could be taken into custody, Greiger died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the home.
