Sahara Barkley, a 24-year-old woman from Jacksonville, Florida, tragically lost her life on January 1, 2018. The incident occurred at a Riverside gas station where Barkley had stopped to make a purchase, leaving her vehicle parked and running. While inside the store, an unknown male stole her car, prompting Barkley to chase after it on foot. Unable to catch the vehicle, she returned to the store and confronted a woman named Tairrah McGriff.
During their interaction, McGriff pulled out a handgun and shot Barkley. Surveillance footage from the store and another nearby business captured the events leading up to the shooting, showing McGriff and the male suspect together before the car theft and subsequent shooting.
The investigation led to the arrest of Tairrah McGriff, who was charged with manslaughter with a firearm and carrying a concealed firearm. McGriff was found guilty by a jury in October 2019 and faced a maximum sentence of 30 years in Florida State Prison. The sentencing hearing was scheduled for November 2019, where McGriff received a 21-year prison sentence for her role in Barkley's death. The male suspect, Shawntez Edmondson, was also charged and convicted in connection with the incident. He pled guilty to grand theft auto and driving on a suspended license, receiving a 10-year prison sentence.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Coreylyn Crawford and Dan Skinner, with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office conducting the investigation. The tragic death of Sahara Barkley left her family and friends in mourning, and her mother, who was with her just hours before the incident, expressed deep grief over the loss of her daughter. Barkley was also the mother of a one-year-old boy and was reportedly pregnant at the time of her death.
