In Central Islip, New York, a 39-year-old woman named Shayna Staton was found deceased in her Hawthorne Avenue apartment. A concerned family member, having not heard from her for approximately 20 hours, went to her home and discovered the tragic scene. Police were called to the residence where they found Ms. Staton between her bed and the wall, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into her death led authorities to identify her boyfriend as a suspect in the homicide. When detectives attempted to apprehend him, a tense situation unfolded. The suspect barricaded himself inside a nearby home and began firing at the officers. During the exchange of gunfire, a three-year-old girl in an adjacent home was struck by a stray bullet. Fortunately, the child's injuries were not life-threatening, and she was expected to make a full recovery.
The standoff concluded when the suspect was found deceased inside the home from what was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Prior to her death, Ms. Staton was remembered by her family as a 'sweet girl' who had been a track star in high school and had gone on to a career teaching autistic and disabled children.
