In the summer of 2023, a promising young life was tragically cut short on the streets of Brooklyn. Foridun Maulonov, a 15-year-old male, was fatally shot in the back in the Bensonhurst neighborhood. He was a talented judo champion who, according to his family, was a source of immense pride. Maulonov was one of six children in a family that had immigrated from Uzbekistan over a decade prior. He was described as a good boy who loved America and was a supportive member of his immigrant community.
According to police sources, he had no prior encounters with law enforcement and no gang affiliations.
The incident unfolded on a Monday afternoon after Maulonov was leaving a summer school program. An argument that had started earlier at the school between other students was set to be settled with a fistfight. Maulonov was with a group that included the intended target of the ensuing violence. As the rival student appeared, he unexpectedly pulled out a nine-millimeter handgun and fired seven shots into the group. While the intended target was not hit, a bullet struck Maulonov in the back. He was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and succumbed to his wounds the following morning.
For nearly a year, the suspect in Maulonov's death remained at large, having fled the country shortly after the shooting. The alleged shooter, who was 17 at the time, was identified by the New York Police Department. Investigators tracked him to Panama, but extradition was delayed until he turned 18. In June of 2024, the suspect, was successfully extradited back to Brooklyn and taken into custody.
Upon his return to Brooklyn, the suspect was met by law enforcement at the 62nd Precinct. He is now facing a series of serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, gang assault, and criminal possession of a firearm. The family of Foridun Maulonov, who had been left to grieve and wonder if justice would ever be served, can now see the legal process begin for the young man accused of ending their son's life.
