In the summer of 2023, the life of 18-year-old Divine Calloway was tragically cut short on the streets of Rochester, New York. On the night of August 10th, police responded to the corner of Central Park and Second Street to find the young man with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the death of the recent Rochester City School District graduate revealed that an altercation
preceded the fatal shooting. Authorities identified 16-year-old Al Oliver II as the suspect. In a brutal sequence of events, Calloway attempted to flee from the confrontation, but Oliver chased him down and shot him. Following the homicide, Oliver fled the state in an attempt to evade capture.
The search for the suspected killer extended to Florida, where he was apprehended. Oliver was found in possession of a stolen gun at the time of his arrest and was subsequently extradited back to Monroe County to face charges. He was charged with second-degree murder and two gun-related crimes for his role in Calloway's death. In addition to the murder charge, Oliver was also connected to a separate shooting that occurred a month prior, on July 13, 2023, on Greenley Street, where he shot and wounded another individual.
In court, Al Oliver II pleaded guilty to Murder in the Second Degree for the death of Divine Calloway and Assault in the First Degree for the earlier shooting. In May 2024, the now 17-year-old was sentenced for his crimes. A Monroe County judge sentenced him to 21 years to life in the New York State Department of Corrections for the murder, bringing a close to the legal proceedings in a case that left a family and community mourning the loss of a young life.
