On a cold Thanksgiving night in Rochester, New York, a family returning from their holiday dinner found themselves in a terrifying and ultimately tragic situation. Davezhone Bratcher, a 23-year-old male, was in a car with three family members, including his 5-year-old sister, when their vehicle was blocked by another car on Cummings Street. It was approximately midnight, marking the early moments of November 26, 2021, when at least one armed individual approached their car in what authorities
would later describe as a random act of violence.
The driver of the car carrying Bratcher and his family attempted to reverse and escape the sudden threat. In response, the armed suspect opened fire on the vehicle. Both the driver, a man in his 30s, and Davezhone Bratcher were struck by the gunfire. Despite being wounded in the upper body, the driver managed to speed away and get to a hospital. While he would ultimately survive his injuries, Bratcher was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other two passengers in the car, including the young child, were physically unharmed but left to grapple with the shocking violence that had just unfolded.
In the months that followed the deadly encounter, the Rochester Police Department conducted an extensive investigation into what they characterized as a two-day crime spree. Their efforts led to a major breakthrough in March 2022, when a Monroe County Grand Jury handed down indictments against four men in connection with a series of violent crimes, including the murder of Davezhone Bratcher. The individuals charged were Quincy Brumfield, Robert Perdue Jr., James Lee Scott Jr., and Matthew Williams. The crime spree was described by law enforcement as a series of random and senseless acts.
By February 2024, the legal proceedings for the four men charged in the violent spree reached their conclusions. Quincy Brumfield, Robert Perdue, and James Scott Junior all pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. The fourth man, Matthew Williams, was found guilty by a jury on charges of robbery, attempted robbery, assault, and various weapons charges. These convictions brought a measure of closure to the legal chapter of a case that began with a family's holiday celebration and ended in a senseless loss of life.
