On a Friday evening, Edward Jamir Neal, an 18-year-old Black or African American male, was inside a residence in Hampton, Virginia, when his life was cut short. The date was March 5, 2021, and Neal was in a back room at a home on the 1000 block of Bethel Avenue, engrossed in video games with a small group of friends. At approximately 10:43 p.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the night, and Neal was struck by a bullet to the neck.
Despite his grave injury, Neal managed to leave the room,
holding his neck as he made his way outside the house. In the grass next to a vehicle, his friends desperately tried to render aid while they awaited the arrival of emergency services. Hampton police officers were the first to arrive, having been dispatched for what was initially reported as a stabbing but was quickly updated to a shooting. They immediately began CPR, which was continued by medics upon their arrival.
Neal was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, but the wound proved to be fatal. He was pronounced deceased at approximately 11:15 p.m. The investigation into his death was launched and remains an active homicide case, with authorities in Hampton continuing to seek information from the public.
